Fighting Comment Spam

July 26, 2007

Jean

A number of UGAL websites have been hit lately by comment spam: using automated scripts (aka bots), spammers post their spam in web forms like the one at the end of this news. Some customers saw 500+ Viagra like comments posted to their website per day. Hopefully it will not happen anymore, our systems have just been upgraded to detect and reject automated comments.

Captchas is one of the most common weapon used to detect bots: by asking you to copy the scrambled text from an image into a text box, systems are able to identify you as a human (bots can't read very well).

Unfortunately, captchas have a number of drawbacks, including the fact that they are annoying and that they can be difficult to read. That's why we decided to not implement them. Instead, we are using a proprietary super secret technology. Except that it is entirely transparent to your visitors, we can't tell much about it, the bots are listening.

Let's see in the coming days of efficient it turns out to be.
