Easier newsletter subscriptions

February 1, 2011

Jean

UGAL now makes it easier for your visitors to subscribe to your newsletter. On top of the usual newsletter subscription page, your visitors can now opt-in when they post a news comment, request information about a product or fill-in your contact form. A simple "Subscribe to our newsletter" check-box has been added to all the forms displayed on your website.

If you have an e-commerce website with UGAL, customers placing an order will automatically be added to your subscriber list as well. We felt that bypassing the opt-in newsletter subscription during checkout was the right choice, because UGAL makes it very easy to unsubscribe, and never re-subscribes someone who has previously opted out.

A few rules

As much as we try to make it as easy as possible to grow your newsletter list, we need to be very sensitive about the newsletters sent by UGAL. Too many spam reports and our IP addresses will be blacklisted with ISPs, impacting the newsletter delivery rates of all our customers.

We need to follow a few common sense rules when it comes to newsletter list management:

  • Subscribe only people who have expressed interest in your business. UGAL does not provide (yet) an interface to upload contacts to your subscriber list, but if you email us a list we can upload it to your website. We simply request that you upload addresses for people who have opted in or have already done business with you.
  • Provide an easy unsubscribe mechanism. When you send a newsletter with UGAL, a one click unsubscribe link is automatically added at the bottom of your copy. If you use an external service to send out the newsletters (Campaign Monitor, Mail Chimp, Constant Contact etc...), make sure to redirect the unsubscribe link to UGAL, so that the list on your website is always up to date.
  • Never ever email again someone who has unsubscribed. Unsubscribe requests need to be honored 100% of the time, without exception. It is key in maintaining a good reputation with the ISPs so that they keep delivering future newsletters.
